When to kill a campaign that tests well but feels wrong
Brand stewards are writing explicit kill criteria before tests start, so data wins do not erode trust.
Testing culture can create a blind spot. A variant wins on clicks and conversions while quietly eroding trust or brand distinctiveness. Brand stewards are responding with explicit kill criteria agreed before tests launch. The goal is not to reject data. The goal is to protect long horizon assets that short horizon metrics cannot see.
Define what cannot be traded away
Kill criteria might include tonal boundaries, visual equities that must remain recognizable, and category specific sensitivities such as fear based messaging in healthcare adjacent categories. The list should be short and serious. If everything is sacred, nothing is.
How to disagree without politics
Conflict spikes when criteria are vague. A written charter that separates optimization variables from brand variables gives teams language to resolve disputes. When a test violates a charter line, the decision is documented and archived so future teams learn.
The best organizations use testing to sharpen brand, not to sand it down to a generic winner.
